Montezuma’s varsity boys basketball team returns “a good group, that has some eperience,” said Head Coach Derrick Dengler. “It has been a great group of young men to work with,” he said.
Guard Brady Boulton, a junior who will be starting his third varsity season, is a third-team all-stater who already is closiing in on 1,000 career points
But he’s not all. The Braves have some depth and some quickness, Dengler said.
The Braves were set to play scrimmage games on Saturday, Nov. 23, starting at 9 a.m. at Colo-Nesco.
They open regular season play Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Lynnville-Sully. Mlntezuma was 15-8 overall and 11-5 in the league last season.
“We think we will have a chance to be pretty good defensively,” and coming from Dengler, those are telling words, because his teams usually hang their hats on defense.
“We have some quick guards who should be able to bother other teams’ top players,” the coach said.
“Offensively, we are led by Brady,” Dengler said.
Last year, Boulton averaged 24 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists. He shot 46 percent from the field and 77.6 percent from the line.
“Expect some other guys, like Max Anderson and Kohen Holland, to continue to grow as well,” Dengler said.
“I think we will play fast and get up lots of shots,” the coach said.
Boulton is listed as a 5-10 guard. He is extremely quick in the open floor.
Holland is a 6-5 senior forward who averaged 7.1 points, 5.6 reboounds and shot 51 pecent from the fied.
Anderson is a 6-1 senior guard who scored 10.2 points a game, shot 37 percent on threes, and had 2.9 rebounds per game. He also had 41 assists and 2.5 steals per game.
Others with experience who are looking to step up are junior guard Luke Brennan, sophomore forward Dane Strong and guards David Rose, a senior, and Broox Stockman, a junior.
Brennan, 5-10, averaged 0.7 points last year. Strong 6-1, scored 2.4 points per outing and averaged 1.5 rebounds.
Rose scored 1.6 points and averaged 2.4 rebounds. He alsohad 29 total steals and 17 assists.
Stockman is a 5-10 guard who added considerable athleticism to the Braves’ football team this fall.
Knox is a 6-2 junior forward.
