MONTEZUMA – Sigourney’s baseball team came in to 3-6 Montezuma unbeaten in SICL play and for the season.
The Savages remained that way. But Montezuma hung with them all the way in Sigourney’s 8-6 win on Friday, June 13.
Sigourney led 2-0 after two innings, but the Braves plated three runs in the third to go up 3-2.
Montezuma scored twice in the fourth to go up 5-2.
The Savages scored a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to jump back on top, 6-5.
Sigourney scored three in the top of the seventh.
Montezuma got something started it its half of the seventh, but Sigourney held the Braves to one run. That accounted for the Savages’ two-run win.
The Braves made just four hits, but made the most of them.
Gavin Wilcox went two-for-four, scored two runs and drove in two.
Luke Erselius had one hit, but drove in two runs.
The Braves’ other hit was by Nolan Hudnut.
Erselius had two stolen bases.
Montezuma made two errors, to three by the Savages.
Easton Hudnut got the start on the mound for the Braves. He worked 4.0 innings, allowed 4 Sigourney hits and three runs, all earned. He walked two and struck out four.
Isaac Wedgewood pitched three innings, allowed 4 hits and 5 runs, 4 of them earned. He walked four and struck out four. He was tagged with the pitching loss.
Ryker Van Den Heuval hit a double and drove in two runs for Sigourney. Cole McKay also had two RBIs.
Lincoln Power, who hit a double, was the second of three Sigourney pitchers and picked up the win. He allowed just one hit during 2.2 crucial innings of work.
Sigourney moved to 12-0 on the season and 9-0 in conference play.
Montezuma fell to 3-6 overall.
