Braves were the ‘big bads’ vs. Wolves

WINFIELD – The Montezuma Braves dominated Winfield-Mt. Union physically and rolled to a 55-14 non-district football win in what some had predicted would be a close game.

The game was played in perfect early fall weather on Friday, Sept. 20.

The Wolves are using a new offense this year and it was throttled by the larger Braves going into halftime.

Winfield-Mt.Union mixes passing and running, but the Braves seriously limited their opponent’s ground game and took a 35-14 lead into halftime. The Wolves rushed 23 times for a net of 18 yards. They netted 138 yards and 15 completed passes.

The Braves extended their lead to 49-14 after three quarters to initiate a continuous clock.

One rankings service had called Montezuma just a three-point favorite coming in to this contest.

Braves running backs Broox Stockman and Brett Plants ran into gaps up front created by Montezuma’s offensive line. The Braves generated 460 yards of total offense, including 383 on the ground.

Montezuma averaged 8.0 yards per rushing attempt.

Broox Stockman gained 121 yards on 13 rushes including 3 touchdowns. Boulton had 118 yards on 13 carries, one for a score, and fullback Brett Plants had 91 yards on 15 carries, one for a touchdown.
