Braves win first, 17-7

The Montezuma varsity baseball team evened its record at 1-1 with a 17-7 home victory over Tri-County on Wednesday evening, June 17.

A nine-run third inning was the big frame for the Braves, who ripped a total of 17 hits on the night. Montezuma led 5-4 prior to that nine-run explosion.

Owen Cook, Eddie Burgess and Colton Benson each had two hits for the Braves, including a double apiece. Connor Van Zee also had a double.

Cook and Van Zee each drove in three runs. Burgess, Benson, and Kodie Strong drove in two runs each.

The Braves also sole nine bases, including two each by Cole Watts, Cam Johnson and Preston Hirsch.

Cole Watts pitched the first three and two-third innings for the Braves. He yielded six hits and seven runs, three of which were earned. He walked one and struck out three.

Cook pitched the final two and one-third innings. He didn’t allow a run or a walk and struck out one.

UP NEXT – The Braves are right back in action Firday, June 19, with girls and boys games at Belle Plaine. Both varsity first pitches will be at 6 p.m.
