If you are a betting person, put your money on the 2047 Braves golf team to win the SICL title.

Fifty plus years ago, boys’ golf was a new sport at MHS, starting up in the late 1960s with legendary I. A. Gabriel as the coach.  Prep standouts Danny Anderson, Dave Sutherland, Steve Bowers and Kevin Miller were on the first MHS golf team.

1997 SICL CHAMPS:  Front row, left to right:  Matt Bryan, Jeff Sinkler, Brent Flander, D.J. Davis, & Joel Kercheval.  Back row:  Coach Kip Davis, Dave Alexander, Aaron McVay, Bryan Sandholm, Kyle Earley, Spencer Long, and Koby Pagel.

Coach Jerome Stripling took over after Gabe retired in 1970 and in two short years the Braves took home the conference trophy, winning their first conference title in 1972.

Twenty-five years later, 1997, Coach Kip Davis had a fine group of golfers, led by Bryan Sandholm & Aaron McVay.  And another 25 years later the Braves are on top again!  Congrats to the 2022 and SICL Golf Champions!

(Editor’s note:  A big thank you to Dick Rabenold and Aaron McVay for their input on this story).

1972 SICL CHAMPS:  Front row: David Arendt & Mark Pugh.  Back row:  Dick Rabenold, Coach Jerome Stripling, Danny Steffy, and Jeff Stripling.
