MARENGO – I don’t recall writing about the Montezuma boys contending for the team title in any major meets in the recent past.

But the still-improving Braves were heavily involved in a near-miss at the Rick Wanamaker Invitational on Thursday, May 5.

As it was, Montezuma placed third, with 118 points.

But, the Braves were just six points out of first.

Iowa Valley won with 124 points, then came BGM with 120. And after Montezuma’s 118 came Belle Plaine with 104.

“The boys really did compete well,” said Braves Coach John Beck. “We had a lot of season-best times and throws.”

The big scoring event for Montezuma was the 3,200-meter run, where Jayden Ross and Carter McKee went one-two, scoring 18 team points. Ross clocked 11:51.78; McKee was in at 12:13.45.

Ross and McKee placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,600, giving the Braves another big scoring event.

Eli Bustamante won the open 400-meter dash in 55.63 seconds.

Jack Erselius was second in the 100 at 12.37.

Garrett Watts cleared 5-6 in the high jump to place fourth, while Bustamante was fifth at 5-2.

Kennen Roadcap made it to 40 feet in the shot put, at 40 feet, 7 inches, and third place.

Zach Bennett and Bryson Stockman went three-four in the long jump. Bennett went 17 feet and one-half inch; Stockman jumped 16-7.5.

The Braves were second in a pair of relays, the 4×400 and the 4×800.

The Braves placed third in the sprint medley, with Marty Knox, Jack Erselius, Eli Bustamante and Carter Michalek clocking in at 1:45.21.

UP NEXT – Montezuma’s boys and girls host the Darrell Brand Relays on Monday, May 9.
