BELLE PLAINE – Montezuma wrestlers Chance Gillum and Kennen Roadcap each earned fifth-place finishes and Brian Diaz took a sixth as the Braves’ three-man team competed in the SICL meet Saturday, Feb. 1.
As a team, the trio scored 15 points, which placed tenth in a 10-team field.
Belle Plaine won the tournament with 175.5 points, while Iowa Valley was second with 163.
Roadcap won by a 6-1 decision and Gillum scored a fall in their matches for fifth place at 285 and 220 pounds, respectively.
Diaz was pinned in his fifth-place match at 170 pounds.

Brice Taylor, BGM, pinned Roadcap, 1:42.
For fifth place – Roadcap defeated Millie Peach, Iowa Valley, 6-1.
UP NEXT – Montezuma is in Class 1A Sectional action, on Saturday, Feb. 8. The meet starts at 12 noon at BGM. Wrestlers who place first or second in their weight class will advance to the District meet at Denver on Saturday, Feb. 15. Admission to these two meets is $6.
GOING PLACES! – Montezuma’s wrestlers have been seeing the wrestling sights in recent days. Earlier in January, during a JV tournament in Solon, they got to meet and have a photo (below) shot with Iowa wrestling and coaching legend, Dan Gable. Then on Friday, Jan. 31, they were part of a sold-out crowd at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City that watched #1 Iowa beat #2 Penn State, 19-17.
