Bravettes are a close second at Brand Relays

Heave that shot! And that's just what a Bravette is doing at the Darrell Brand Relays.

The weather was superb and so was the competitive spirit of the Bravettes track and field team.

Montezuma won six events, placed second in another, and finished in second place, just four points behind winning North Mahaska, at the Darrell Brand Relays on Monday, May 8, on their home track.

The girls did great!” said Montezuma Coach Megan Carlson. “We did not run a ‘heavy’ line-up to try to win the meet, but rather used the event as a primer for the state qualifying meet on Thursday,” the coach said.

The weather was amazing and the kids were amazing, Carlson said.

Montezuma got wins from Ellen Cook in the 3,000 meter run and Claire Erselius in the 1,500.

A baton exchange between Laila Kercheval, left, and Claire Erselius is on the money in the JV 4×200.

The Bravettes also got victorie in the 4×800, distance medley, 4×200 and 4×400 relays.

Mia Boulton was second in the 800-meter run.

It is sometimes hard to balance the stress of the end of the season with the fun and team aspects, but the girls put a lot of things together,” said their coach.

Carlson said, “I am proud of their efforts and I hope we can use this momentum on Thursday for a few more season-bests and work to qualify some events for the State Track Meet.”
