The Montezuma Bravettes bounced back in a major way from their first loss of the season, beating Sigourney 56-17 at home on Friday evening, Dec. 17.

The Bravettes held Sigourney to just two points in the second half.

Montezuma led 15-3 after one quarter and 26-15 at halftime.

The Bravette defense, a mixture of zone and man-to-man coverages, made the interior a no-fly zone for the Savages all night long.

Montezuma’s offense was a bit sluggish in the first half. Leading scorer Shanae Wetering had just two points at intermission.

But that changed abruptly, as the Bravettes made an adjustment that got her the ball with operating room inside.

Wetering poured in 17 second half points. To 19 points she added 8 rebounds.

That helped open up the outside for Montezuma’s out shooters. Mia Boulton scored 14 points, and the Bravettes made seven treys in all.

Six Bravettes scored in the first half, and a total of seven scored during the game. Ellen Cook scored 8 points and Jadyn Sharer had 7, to go with 6 rebounds and a pair of steals.

Montezuma pitched a 17-0 shutout in the third quarter to extend its lead to 43-15.

The Bravettes had lost their first game of the season to North Mahaska on Tuesday night, but took their overall record to 7-1 with this win. They are 5-1 in South Iowa Cedar League play.

Sigourney fell to 3-5 and 3-3.

UP NEXT – Montezuma steps outside of league and Class 1A play Saturday to host Williamsburg, with the girls portion of a girl/boy varsity doubleheader to start about 4 p.m.

STILL RATED – Montezuma’s Tuesday loss dropped the Bravettes just one spot in the rankings, to 11th place. North Mahaska remained at 8th.
