The volleyball Bravettes took a firm step toward the South Iowa Cedar League championship with a 3-0 victory over Lynnville-Sully on Monday night, Oct. 11, at home.
It was the opening match for the Bravettes in the league tournament.
Earlier, Lynnville-Sully earned its shot at Montezuma with a win over English Valleys.
Montezuma will stay home for Thursday’s (Oct. 14) final night of the tournament.
The Bravettes will play North Mahaska at 5 p.m. in a best two-of-three sets semifinal.
That will be followed by Colfax-Mingo vs. Belle Plaine in the other semi.
The two winners will then meet for the SICL championship.
Montezuma, now 18-9, was the only unbeaten team in SICL regular season play. No league title was awarded for that, but an 8-0 record did help the Bravettes in the tournament’s seedings.
Scores in Montezuma’s win over Lynnville-Sully were 25-18, 25-14 and 25-20.
Strong serving, accurate passing, and control at the net paved the way to the Montezuma victory.
The Bravettes had 32 kills in the match, compared to Lynnville-Sully’s 16.
The Bravettes put some mustard on their serves again, scoring 15 aces. Izzy Roorda had seven of those and Katie Reynolds had seven. As a team, Montezuma went 60-69, for an .870 percentage.
Shanae Wetering had 10 kills for the Bravettes, while Korrinn Kehoe and Roorda had six each.
Abby Squires led the Hawks in kills with five. Aliya James was 13-for-13 on serves and had four of the team’s six aces.
