Bravettes cruise to their 14th victory

COLFAX – Montezuma’s girls added another win to their ledger with a 51-8 victory over winless Colfax-Mingo in varsity action Friday evening, Jan. 26.

The Bravattes led 11-0 after one quarter and 24-2 at halftime against a very young team that is averaging just 14 points per game on offense.

Montezuma limited Colfax-Mingo to .176 field goal shooting. “I thought our defense was very solid and we were able to work on our full court defensive rotations,” Bravettes Coach Janel Burgess said.

The Bravettes didn’t shoot all that well themselves: .328 from the field, with no one reaching double figures.

Some night your shots do not fall, but I loved how we continue to be selfless and create the right shot for our team,” Burgess said.

Vivian Cook and Shiressa Wetering each had 9 points for Montezuma. Ellen Cook and Claire Erselius had 8, and Izzy Roorda scored seven.

I thought we had great shots all night,” Burgess said. “We were working the ball, but we did not make shots, which happens.”

The Bravettes won the turnover battle, 17 to Colfax-Mingo’s 31.

Montezuma needed 37 attempts to make five three-pointers. But Colfax-Mingo didn’t make any. Rebounds went to the Bravettes, 24-13.

Montezuma made 23 steals, helped by 16 deflections.

Montezuma took its record to 14-2 overall, and 11-2 in SICL play.

Colfax-Mingo is 0-16 and 0-12.

UP NEXT – The Bravettes will face a much tougher task when they host English Valleys at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27.
