NORTH ENGLISH – The varsity Bravettes scored a big victory over one of the contending basketball teams from the eastern side of the SICL on Friday, Jan. 6.

Montezuma won over English Valleys, 45-40.

The win lifted the 10-1 Bravettes to 7-1 in league play.

Meanwhile, English Valleys fell to 4-3 in the conference – and to 7-4 overall.

We played very composed the entire game and found a way to succeed when it wasn’t pretty,” said Montezuma Coach Janel Burgess.

I was extremely proud of our ball movement and effort,” the coach said.

Guard Madison Johannes led the Bravettes with 15 points – on five-for 15 shooting from behind the arc. The Bravettes were not afraid to lift the long one – they put up 40 three-point attempts in all.

Guard Mia Boulton scored 11 points, and post Shiressa Wetering scored 10 – on four-for-five shooting inside.

The Bravettes le 17-8 after one quarter, 23-18 at halftime, and 37-29 through three.

One thing the Bravettes tried to avoid was fouling the Bears, who went 11-for-11 from the free throw line.

That free throw stat is amazing when you look at their normal percentage of 53, but, oh well,” Burgess said.

Montezuma tied the Bears in rebounds with 30, With Johannes running down nine of them, while Boulton had six.

Jadyn Sharer had six rebounds, and led the team with four of Montezuma’s 10 assists.

This team has a sense of urgency, composure and unity that is really special,” Burgess said.

We have another three-game week ahead of us, starting on the road at Iowa Valley, which will be our third great test in a row.”

UP NEXT – Montezuma plays at Iowa Valley in a non-league game on Monday, Jan. 9.

The unspoken message from Kallie Robison (44) here is, ‘don’t even think about stepping into this lane!’ (Marie Boulton photo).
