Bravettes open a clinic, 70-23

Here was part of the predicament, if you were an Iowa Valley player: A pass from a teammate and three Montezuma defenders arriving at about the same instant.

That doesn’t give you time to do much.

The Bravettes put their opponent in that situation all through a 29-0 first quarter, and much of the way throughout a 70-23 South Iowa Cedar League win Friday, Jan. 8.

Bravettes senior guard Elise Boulton need just six points to reach the 1,000 mark for her career, and she hit it with her second three-pointer just three and one-half minutes into the first quarter. Elise is just the second Bravettes five-on-five player to score 1,000 points. The other is Shateah Wetering.

It takes a team to help individual achievement. The Bravettes celebrate 1,000 career points for Elise Boulton. (Submitted).

The game also marked the return of “unlimited” fans to the gym.

The Bravettes put four girls into double figures scoring – three of them in a first half.

It was a clinic of defense, passing and shooting, against an Iowa Valley club that had a 7-3 overall record coming in.

Montezuma led 49-7 at halftime and it was a continuous clock the rest of the way. The Bravettes led 66-15 through three quarters.

The Bravettes dropped in 10 three-pointers, most after sharp passing and solid screens produced wide-open looks at the basket.

The Bravettes made no turnovers in the first half, and just five for the game. Iowa Valley had 21.

Forward Shanae Wetering, who didn’t make a trey, scored 20 points to lead all scorers.

Guard Mia Boulton, who dropped in five from behind the arc, finished with 17.

Guard Elise Boulton (three treys) ended with 13, and post forward Dylan Holland scored 10.

The win lifted the Bravettes to 12-1 overall and they’re 9-0 against league opponents.

COME BACK – Later in the weekend, when we’ll have official stats and more detail.
