Bravettes sizzle early in 59-38 win

Guard Elise Boulton gets instructions from Head Coach Janel Burgess.

For the second straight game, the Montezuma Bravettes came out playing like their hair was on fire.

This time, a larger school, Prairie City-Monroe (PCM) was victimized as the Bravettes scored the first 14 points, and didn’t allow their guests a basket until the 2:20 mark of the first half.

Montezuma won it, 59-38, on a socially-distanced Thursday evening, Dec. 3, at home.

The Bravettes were driving and dishing on offense, and denying entry passes on defense.

Montezuma led 19-2 after one quarter, and 35-9 at halftime. The Bravettes had already splashed down nine of their 11 treys on the night.

The Mustangs played better defensively for the first five minutes of the third quarter and cut their deficit from 26 to 20 points, then pretty much held it there.

We had another game that showed our ability to be gritty and use our quickness to create turnovers, which then led to offense,” said Bravettes Coach Janel Burgess.

Montezuma had good scoring balance. Mia Boulton led with 19 points, including six-for-13 from three-point range.

Elise Boulton scored 12, and dished nine assists.

Madison Johannes scored nine, and Dylan Holland had eight points.

The Bravettes had 38-30 command of the boards. Kierstyn Price and Holland each had 8 and Johannes ran down seven rebounds.

Paige Steenhoek scored eight points to lead PCM, with three other players coming in with seven each.

We are thankful to have a week where we have three games,” Burgess said. “It allows us to work on our ‘brand’ in live action, which is a plus for a young team.”

The Bravettes lifted their record to 2-1, while PCM fell to 0-3, with the first two defeats coming in close games against Knoxville and Chariton.

UP NEXT – The Bravettes are at Colfax-Mingo for a girls-boys doubleheader on Friday, Dec. 4. The games will be live streamed. To access, go to the Colfax-Mingo Community Schools website and follow the prompts.
