VICTOR – Montezuma spotted HLV a first set victory, but then won the next three to take a 3-1 win in the opening South Iowa Cedar League match of the season for both varsity volleyball teams.
Scores were 23-25, 25-17, 25-23 and 25-7.
The match was played Monday evening, Sept. 13.
“A tremendous start to conference play. A big win over HLV!” said Montezuma Coach Rylie Little.
HLV had beaten the Bravettes in two previous non-conference matches this season.
“Our hitting started off slow, but came alive throughout the four sets,” Little said. “Sometimes the girls use that first set as a warm-up and roll the next three.”
Shanae Wetering led Montezuma with 15 kills. Setter Katie Reynolds had 29 assists in the four-set match.
The Bravettes were sharp with the serve. They were 81-for-86, a .942 percentage.
HLV served well, too, at .920 on 69-for-75. McKenzie Kempf, a sophomore, recorded 16 kills.
“Our hitters stayed aggressive at the net,” Little said. “Our coverage improved, picking up little tips here and there.”
“Allyson Larmore is really learning that libero position well,” Little said. “All of the girls are improving really well.”
“We will be working on finishing out sets and not allowing points to be lost from minor mistakes as we prepare for Lynnville-Sully on Thursday,” Little said.
Montezuma went to 7-7 overall on the season. HLV fell to 3-6.
