Braxton Plants wins at Pekin meet

PEKIN – Montezuma wrestler Braxton Plants was crowned a champion and four other Braves made the medals stand at the Bill Rex Invitational meet at Pekin on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Plants was champion of the 285-pound weight division.

Plants pinned his first two opponents of the day, then scored a 7-2 decision over Ben Squires of Lynnville-Sully in the championship match.

As a team, the Braves scored 71.5 points to place ninth in a 10-school field.

Montezuma’s Wesley Ross was third at 113 pounds. He scored a 6-2 win over Clayton McDonald of Moravia in the third-place match.

Ethan DesRochers was fourth at 132 pounds. He lost on a technical fall in 4:25 to Zach Luedtke of Cardinal in the third-place match.

Brett Plants placed fourth at 215 pounds. Blake Caminsky of Cardinal defeated Plants on injury time in his third-place match.

And Isaac Wedgewood was sixth at 215 pounds. Kaiden Anderson of Chariton pinned Wedgewood in 1:24 in the battle for fifth place.

North Mahaska won the team championship with 246.5 points.
