Immediately after Uconn’s national women’s basketball championship win over South Carolina on Sunday, April 6, national sports journalist Holly Rowe asked Uconn star guard Paige Bueckers for her advice to younger players.
“There’s a lot of people who write you off. There’s a lot of narratives that try go put you in a box, telling you ‘you’ve got to do this, you’ve got to do that, you’ve got to be more like this player, you’ve got to be more like that player,’” Bueckers said.
“There’s people that doubt you because they think you’re doing it on your strength alone. We lean on God’s strength here. Through God’s power, for God’s purposes. We’re not doing this alone,” Bueckers said.
“We have a village that we lean on. Just do it for the people who believe in you. And always stick to who you are.”
Bueckers, who grew up in Minnesota, won her first national championship while finishing her career as a Huskie. She is expected to be the top pick in the WNBA draft on April 14.
