If a big guy dressed like a peacock showed up to trick-or-treat at your house, don’t let it ruffle your feathers.
It’s someone you know (and probably like): Montezuma High School senior quarterback Eddie Burgess.
Burgess has committed to Upper Iowa University to continue his academic and football careers at the Fayette, Iowa, school – home of the Peacocks.
Upper Iowa plays in NCAA Division II in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Burgess made the announcement on his Twitter account on Halloween weekend.
“After a great conversation with Coach (Jason) Hoskins, I’m blessed and excited to receive an offer from Upper Iowa University,” Burgess wrote.
Burgess has been a four-year star in Montezuma’s 8-man program. This season, he threw for 2,126 yards and 28 touchdowns for the 10-1 Braves.
Eddie, a 6-4, 230-pounder, also ran for 1,249 yards and 26 scores.
He caught seven passes for 208 yards and five touchdowns, and intercepted nine passes and returned them for 144 yards and one touchdown.
Burgess led the Braves with 79.0 tackles from his linebacker spot, and averaged 36.6 yards on 15 punts.
“First off, I would like to than everyone who has helped me along the recruiting journey,” Burgess wrote.
“Most importantly, I would like to thank my family for always pushing me to be the best person and student-athlete and the entire Peacock coaching staff for everything they’ve done for me.”
“With this being said, I am blessed to announce that I will be committing to Upper Iowa University to continue my academic and football career.”
“Go Peacocks!”
Upper Iowa University has about 3,700 students. It is located in Fayette, a town of about 1,300 – close to Montezuma’s size – along the Upper Volga River northeast of Waterloo.
