Colfax-Mingo jumped out to a first inning lead and beat the Montezuma Braves 7-3 in varsity baseball Friday evening, July 3.
The game was played in Montezuma, where Braves seniors Brayden Arendt and Preston Hirsch were honored before the game.
The Tigerhawks made it 5-0 in their half of the second inning.
The Braves plated two runs in the second and another in the third to get to within 5-3. But Colfax-Mingo finished things with two in its half of the seventh inning.
Colfax-Mingo outhit Montezuma 12-5.
Eddie Burgess went two-for-four for the Braves and had a stolen base.
Cole Watts hit a double and stole a base. Joey Kercheval drove in a run with a single. Kodie Strong had Montezuma’s other hit, and Cam Johnson drove in a run.
Braves pitchers Owen Cook and Brayden Arendt had Tigerhawk batters beating the ball into the ground.
Burgess at shortstop had four assists, the same as Kodie Strong at second base. First baseman Johnson had 13 putouts.
Cook pitched the first 4.2 innings and was tagged with the defeat. He allowed nine hits and drive runs, two of them earned. He walked three and didn’t strike out a hitter.
Arendt pitched 2.1 innings, giving up three hits and two runs, both earned. He walked two, hit one, and didn’t fan anybody.
The defeat dropped Montezuma to 4-5 on the season, while Colfax-Mingo rose to 5-7.
