Hazel Sig is having a birthday party, and we’re all invited.
Hazel, the co-founder of Sig Manufacturing Co., Inc., has a public birthday party every five years.
But this one is special.
She is celebrating her 100th birthday.
What: 100th birthday party for Hazel.
When: Sunday, Mar. 6
Where: Presbyterian Family Center
Invited: All of us
“Century of Adventure” is what it says on the place mats for the event, and on the mugs Hazel will hand out.
Most of us have been gone, one way or another, for a few years before we get to age 100.
Not Hazel.
She has had a full life, climbing trees and skipping rocks in her early years, riding motorcycles and becoming an aerobatics airplane pilot later.
In 1951, she and her first husband, Glen Sigafoose, founded a model airplane company right here in Montezuma that still flies today and is known the world over.
She recalls of many of her big life events, in rich, vivid detail.
Her public birthday parties started when she was 70.
“The first one wasn’t very big,” she said.
Fast forward to now. It will be held in the Presbyterian Family Center in Montezuma, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 6.
“There will be a flat cake, cupcakes, and finger food,” Hazel says. “It sounds real good.”
“I’ll be there handing out mugs,” she promised.
The mugs began at her 75th birthday party.
Her friend Frank Brownell, board chair of Brownells, Inc., gave her a bunch of 90 roses on the appropriate year and that was a hit.
“We had a private party when I was 99, and he brought an oval basket with 99 roses,” Hazel said. “And he told me, ‘Hazel, you’ll have 100 roses,’” she said.
So while you’re there visiting with Hazel, look for those roses!
And don’t forget to visit with Hazel. She’s counting on it.
