Challenges, but there will be pancakes!

By Roger Allen

For the 57th consecutive year the Montezuma Lions Club will hold its annual breakfast for pheasant hunters and the community this Saturday, Oct. 31.

However there will be a few details handled in a new way due to precautions being taken in this year of “the virus.”

One significant change is that customers may either enjoy their meal on site, or they can receive it for carry out.

Things that will remain the same include the menu: All you want to eat of pancakes, whole hog sausage, eggs, juice and coffee.

The price remains the same: $7 per person. And the location remains the same: Montezuma Memorial Hall, with serving from approximately 6 a.m. to 11 a.m.

There will be an optional opportunity to participate in a raffle for a deluxe 12-gauge shotgun and scope. As always the breakfast is being held on the opening day of pheasant hunting season.

The purpose also remains the same: Raising funds for community service projects and for support of sight saving and sight restoring projects; also hearing and diabetes related causes supported by the Iowa Lions Foundation.

In addition to supporting the breakfast, the public can show its support by bringing used hearing aids and eyeglasses to the breakfast.

Lions cooks and other workers will be wearing masks and gloves, and tables for dining inside Memorial Hall will be positioned with social distancing requirements in mind. Guests dining in may ask for their fried eggs to be cooked to their firmness preference (No guarantees!). Scrambled is the default option for “to go” meals.

A limited number of frozen one-pound packages of whole hog sausage will be available for purchase at the tickets table.

Mike Princer, chairman, has headed up planning for the breakfast. Assistant chairman for Saturday is Dean Teeselink. Also in charge is Club President Jake Thompson.
