SIGOURNEY – A match score of 3-1 doesn’t sound particularly close. Sometimes, the scoreboard lies.
When one team scores 99 match points to the other’s 93, that sounds, well. . . it WAS close!
Sigourney was a little bit better and it was enough, prevailing over Montezuma in four intense, well-played sets in regional volleyball action on Wednesday evening, Oct. 23.
The teams were a little different in style. The Savages were more of an attacking team with its passers and front line players. The Bravettes were tough on defense, and reliant on accuracy with their serves and passes.
Usually, not more than two points separated them through the first two sets, both won by the host team.
The Bravettes altered their defensive alignment toward the middle of the third set, and started to get more of Sigourney’s attacks airborne.
That one- or two-point lead hopped over the net, and the Bravettes won 27-25 to keep the match going.
In game four, Montezuma started to dominate, by moving its attacks around and forcing Sigourney’s defense to scramble a bit.
The Bravettes, needing the win to force a fifth-game tie-breaker, took a 9-1 early lead.
But, momentum leaped the net again. Sigourney went on a 15-3 run to get the lead back.
Montezuma countered and tied the score at 20 and 21, before Sigourney ralled to close out the game and a memorable match.
COME BACK here later, when we’ll have statistics, and possibly some photos.
The Bravettes closed a 13-15 season that carried hope throughout, which will continue next season.
Sigourney, 17-5, will continue its post-season experience.
