Cook’s no-no tames the Bears!

Talk about a bounce back game!

The baseball Braves had lost a tough one on the road the night before.

But the Braves left that one behind, with pitcher Owen Cook leading the way.

Cook threw a no-hitter, complete with no runs, no walks and nine strikeouts, as Montezuma scored a 5-0 home victory over English Valleys on Friday evening, June 11.

Cook needed just 84 pitches over seven innings to tame the Bears, who got back on the bus with a 3-5 overall record, 3-4 in SICL play.

Montezuma moved to 5-2, which includes 4-2 against the league.

Cook’s offerings had the Bears beating the ball into the ground for the most part, and Montezuma’s defense responded by making plays. Their two errors didn’t lead to any scoring.

The Braves had just three hits themselves, and for once, none of them came from Cole Watts.

But Watts figured in the scoring. Twice he reached base on errors, and twice he scored. He was three-for-four on steals.

Eddie Burgess had Montezuma’s other two stolen bases, and scored a run.

Burgess, Connor Van Zee and Cam Johnson had the Braves’ hits.

Van Zee hit a double and knocked in two runs with it. Johnson’s single also chased home a run.

Joey Kercheval got a run batted in by drawing a bases loaded walk.

UP NEXT – Montezuma has a big one on Monday night, June 14, when league-leading Sigourney is the host.
