WAYLAND – Montezuma hit WACO with a 29-point second quarter and rolled to a 55-20 win over the Warriors in Class 8 football on Friday, Oct. 2.
The Braves didn’t get away to as quick a start as the last two weeks, when they had a continuous clock going after scoring 40-plus points in the first quarter of both games.
In fact, WACO scored first in this one, but after the Braves got started, they rolled to their sixth win without a defeat this season.
Senior wide receiver Trey Shearer scored four touchdowns, three on passes from quarterback Eddie Burgess, and the fourth on a long kickoff return.
The Braves led 13-6 after one quarter, 42-12 at halftime and 55-12 through three quarters. Montezuma didn’t punt until the fourth quarter.
Burgess passed for five touchdowns and ran for two.
Cole Watts ran under two of Burgess’ scoring tosses.
The Warriors gained some ground behind quarterback Will Edeker, but the Braves came up with key stops or turnovers during the middle portion of the game.
WACO stands at 3-3 overall after the defeat.
