Cross country athletes getting ready to run!

By Coach Kevin Gartman

Our Montezuma cross country team has had a really strong summer.

At the high school level, we return all 7 members of the boys team from last year and 10 of 14 on the girls side, which has allowed us to get after it a bit more without a dramatic revamp of what we do.

We’ve spent the summer focusing on getting stronger in many aspects. From early mornings in the weight room before and after practice, to speed and agility training to ensure we keep the same explosiveness and speed, to three practice a week as a team, it’s been a lot of work but it’s paying off.

Our practices have been more focused on building endurance through repeating speed work as opposed to past years where the focus was more on building mileage on their legs prior to August.

As this season rolls around with a practice start date of August 8th, we look forward to coming in strong and ready to roll for our first meet three weeks later.

Personally, I’ve tried to do more branding work with the team, so I can be better about sharing results and fun things our team is doing.
