EARLHAM – When the Bravettes take on a larger school, you can count on them leading with their defense.
Such was the case when Montezuma held Class 2A Earlham to single digit scoring during the first three quarters of a 53-28 Bravettes win. The game was played Friday evening, Jan. Jan. 3.
“We started off the new year in a positive way with a solid team performance,” Coach Janel Burgess said. “Our defense is constantly growing and it was very solid on the road.”
The win lifted Montezuma to 9-0 on the season.
Shateah Wetering scored 20 points, Elise Boulton had 10, and Shanae Wetering put in nine to lead Bravettes scoring.
On defense, the Bravettes limited Earlham to .275 field goal shooting and 15 fewer shot attempts.
No Earlham player reached double figures. Rachel Smith, a 5-10 inside player who had been averaging 12.5, produced eight, and 5-8 Alli Boyle (14.6), was limited to six.
Earlham’s team total of 28 points was its lowest output of a 3-5 season.
“Offensively, we are constantly evolving,” Burgess said, noting that she expects to see continued free-flowing ball movement.
Montezuma shot .382 from the field.
Shateah Wetering shot 7-for-17 from the field, and got herself to the line enough to go five-for-six. She also led the team in assists with four.
Elise Boulton’s 10 points included a pair of three-pointers. She also had three rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Shanae Wetering scored nine points on four-for-five shooting, which included a trey.
Guard Maddy McKeag contributed heavily. She led the team in rebounds with six, had two assists, led in steals with four, and had a deflection on defense.
“I’m looking forward to watching players develop and continue to contribute in a variety of ways,” Burgess said.
UP NEXT – The Bravettes are at Tri-County on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
