Defenses collided; Bravettes blinked first

Defenses ruled for both teams through three quarters Tuesday, Dec. 13, when the girls basketball teams from North Mahaska and Montezuma, both 3-0 in league play coming in, met for the first time this season.

But the Warhawks, who hadn’t scored more than 11 points in any quarter, broke loose for 20 in the fourth, and it was enough to allow them to come from a point down after three periods to win by six, 50-44.

We definitely had a night where the offense wasn’t hitting on all cylinders and our defense showed glimpses of Bravette Basketball defense. But ultimately, we got beat by the better team tonight,” said Montezuma Coach Janel Burgess.

North Mahaska’s defense was certainly worth writing about. The Warhawks limited Montezuma to .291 field goal shooting, which included just 6-for-27 on three-pointers.

Shiressa Wetering shot 3-for-10 on her way to 10 points for the Bravettes, to which she added 8 rebounds.

Mia Boulton scored 12 points for Montezuma, but needed 20 attempts to make 5 field goals

Jadyn Sharer scored seven points and was 3-for-6 from the field.

Ellen Cook scored 11 points, but needed 14 shots to make 3 baskets.

You get the picture: The Warhawks were tough to get an open look against.

Guard Madison Johannes didn’t score and was able to get off just four shots.

Boulton had her share of positives: Team highs of five in steals and four in assists, plus four rebounds.

Sorry, but we don’t have North Mahaska stats at this time.

The Warhawks go to 5-1 overall and 4-0 against the conference.

Montezuma’s figures are 4-` and 3-1.

I am eager to get back to the court with this awesome group of ladies and learn from our challenge tonight,” Burgess said.

UP NEXT – Montezuma’s boys and girls are at Sigourney on Friday, Dec. 16.
