A gloom that settled in on Montezuma High School last week lingered into Tuesday.
In varsity volleyball, Colfax-Mingo outscored the Bravettes 51-40 in the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead in a best-of-five match. Across the street, two Braves football teams were being bruised by the Baxter Bolts.
Back inside, something happened after that second set. Suddenly, the Bravettes wouldn’t let the ball hit the floor.
Montezuma blew away the gloom, at least for Tuesday, by winning sets three, four and five, and the match, 3 sets to 2, on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
Serving was a major part of it. The Bravettes served at a sizzling .942 percentage, 97 good ones out of 103 attempts, including 10 aces.
Elizabeth De Jong led in this department, going 25-for-25, with four aces.
Colfax-Mingo kept firing, but the Bravettes moved their feet on defense. They came up with 144 digs in the match. Izzy Roroda led with 45, Madison Van Zee had 23 and Laila Kercheval had 20.
The Bravettes outscored the Tigerhawks 65-51 in the final three sets to turn things around.
Montezuma had 39 kills. Roorda led with 9, Kylee Larmore had 8, Kercheval had 8 and Sydnee Burgess had 7. It was a real team effort in the stats category, with many players accumulating significant totals.
The Bravettes moved to 3-5 on the season, while Colfax-Mingo fell to 2-5.
UP NEXT – The Bravettes will try to stay on a hard roll against a tough Iowa Valley team on the road on Thursday, Sept. 7.
