Montezuma’s JV boys basketball team is on a hard roll.
The Braves won their second game this week on Thursday, Jan. 7, beating North Mahaska 46-42 at home. The Warhawks won by double figures when they played earlier this season.
Garrett Watts led the Braves’ charge with 29 points. But he had help.
“The boys played an awesome game,” said Coach Cal Smith. “They are doing a much better job running the offense and getting stops on defense. They are also doing a lot better at getting defensive rebounds.”
Montezuma led 23-19 at halftime and 34-26 through three quarters. The Braves shot .425 from the field, to .281 shooting by North Mahaska.
Watts was 10-for-16 from the field, including five-for-five from behind the three-point line. He added six rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists.
Maguire De Jong scored seven points, grabbed five rebounds, dished five assists and had three deflections and two steals.
Camden Michalek scored six points and grabbed six rebounds.
Sawyer Tingle had four points and four rebounds.
“Overall, we have come out ready to play and have started off with a lot of energy and intensity,” Smith said.
“We won’t play until next Friday (Jan. 15, at home) against Keota, so we have a week to fine-tune our fundamentals and continue having the success we’ve had lately,” the coach said.
