We’ll use the words of William Shatner, the 90-year-old actor who played Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek, upon his landing on earth after a very real 10-minute ride into space earlier this week:
“It was . . .extraordinary!” he said. “And I hope I never get over it!”
Montezuma outlasted Colfax-Mingo in five sets to win the SICL volleyball championship Thursday night, and it was, well . . .like Captain Kirk said!
The fifth set is a tie-breaker, to 15 points. Even it went into overtime, with the Bravettes pulling it out, 17-15.
Other scores in this 3-2 thriller for Montezuma were 22-25, 25-21, 21-26 and 25-21.
How close was this match?
Consider in the first four sets, it was 93-92 for Montezuma. It wound up 110 to 107.
Extraordinary, and the final stats likely are going to bear that out.
The win lifted Montezuma to 20-9 overall. It was the team’s 11th win against an SICL opponent, with no losses.
Colfax-Mingo fell to 20-8.
The Tigerhawks beat Belle Plaine in Thursday’s semifnals, while the Bravettes were 2-1 winners over a tough North Mahaska team. Scores were 25-15, 19-25 and 15-11.
The Bravettes played the first semifinal at 5 p.m., then got to watch and rest while Belle Plaine and Colfax-Mingo played. The Tigerhawks then had to jump right back into action.
The Bravettes’ unbeaten regular season earned them the top seed in the tournament, and that extra 90 minutes or so of rest between matches.
We don’t have many other details yet about the championship match, but come back here Friday and over the weekend.
UP NEXT – The Bravettes move right into Class 1A regional play on Monday, and they’ll again be at home, taking on Twin Cedars at 7 p.m.
