Football Braves find an opponent!

Game on!

A football opponent for the Montezuma Braves has been found!

It’s Kingsley-Pierson, from northwest Iowa. The teams will play at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, hosted by Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School, which plays its games in Gladbrook.

Kingley-Pierson, located about 30 miles east of Sioux City, was to have opened its season against Siouxland Christian of Sioux City. That team canceled its season.

Instead, for this week, the Panthers will be making the three-hour and ten-minute trip across the derecho-ravaged state to meet the Braves, who have to go just over 50 miles to meet them in Gladbrook.

Kingsley-Pierson was 4-5 last season. They played a tough schedule in northwest Iowa, which takes its high school sports seriously.

The leading passer on last year’s team isn’t listed on this year’s roster. But, one of the running backs, Damon Schmid (5-6, 145) ran some plays from quarterback a year ago.

Schmid was the leading rusher a year ago, with 586 yards, a 6.0 per carry average and 10 touchdowns.

He also caught 15 passes for 139 yards and one score.

The top returning tackler on the team is 5-10, 200-pounder Dustin Plendl, who was in on 66.5 total stops.

The squad is similar to the Braves in number and like Montezuma, has a smattering of size.

Montezuma was ranked #7 in Class 8 in the initial state poll conducted by The Cedar Rapids Gazette.

Admission is by a free will donation.

Social distancing guidelines are expected, please wear a mask or stay at least 6 feet from other spectators.

Concessions will be limited to prepackaged items along with drinks.

Let’s safely support the Braves on this rare high school football Saturday!!!

Update on seating for Saturday: Lots of space in end zones and the visitor side. They have a huge elevated grass hill area as well. Feel free to bring lawn chairs to social distance as like summer sports.

Gladbrook field location: Drive to Gladbrook…. then approximately ½-1 mile northwest of Gladbrook on a gravel road. From Hwy 96, go one mile west of Gladbrook, turn north on C Ave. and C Ave. will take you directly to the field (approx ½-1 mile). There is no direct address/number.
