The Montezuma Lions Club has participated in several fundraising basketball games versus several opponents during its 75-year history, all dedicated to benefit needs in the community and beyond.
This featured game was in a challenge accepted by school faculty members to benefit the recently begun AFS exchange student program. It was played on a Friday-the-13th in March 1964
THE LIONS TEAM, shown planning its strategy and building their courage to oppose the faculty for the game to benefit the AFS exchange student program. Pictured are, from left, in front: Bill Rempp, Maynard Hutchinson, player-coach; Keith Watts and Bill Bernard. Behind are: Lee Thomson, Roger Allen, Loel Ferguson, Marvin Bunnell, Bob Ford, Sheldon Laffe, Dode Baustian and Hilbert Beebe. The Friday-the-13th date and the Beatles wigs were blamed for bringing bad luck, as it was reported “the team suffered a moral defeat with a 39-all tie.” Writer’s/photographer’s note: A portion of the large crowd is included in the photos because it was thought many older readers would enjoy seeing how many people in the audience they can identify.
THE MEDICINE MEN AND THEIR MASCOT, members of the faculty team. Their mascot was “Kid the goat, for whom “Help the Kid” tickets were sold by Lions members. Squad members went by other titles but in reality they are, in foreground, Bob Madison with “Kid,” and from left, first row: Duane Marcellus, Lew Lundy, Gayle Creswell, Jerome Stripling and Ron Willrich. Back row: Cook and Randelman, student teachers; Tom Erickson, Darrell Dobernecker, Carroll Rugland, Mike Donahue and Paul Jones.
