Girls: 3rd at SICL, but 15 season bests!

SIGOURNEY – The track and field season is mostly about preparing for the big meets at the end of the season – like the SICL championships on Tuesday, May 4.

It’s a meet you plan for the entire season, getting times for seeds, perfecting handoffs and events. . .”

But what’cha gonna do when circumstances cancel some of your plans?

Dance with who you bring, that’s what. And the Montezuma Bravettes danced pretty well at SICL. They posted 15 season bests in a third-place finish, tied with Colfax-Mingo.

Dylan Holland finishes a strong leg in a relay event at SICL.

Lynnville-Sully beat Belle Plaine for the team title.

With illness and allergies running through the school right now, the Bravettes were down some key pieces for this meet,” Carlson said. “This required many girls to step into new roles, but that is something this team does a great job with.”

No kidding, 15 bests! “Some of the girls didn’t even know the exact events they were competing in until we got on the bus,” Carlson said.

Katie Reynolds got Montezuma’s lone win with a swift 13.10 in the 100-meter dash. She was second in the 200 at 27.70.

Reynolds also anchored a second-place sprint medley team which included Coral Lowry, Madison Johannes and Ash Krousie.

Ashlee Eilander competes in the hurdle shuttle at SICL.

The Bravettes were second in the 4×400, with Krousie, Izzy Roorda, Madison Johannes and Alivia Cline running. Cline also placed third in the 400-meter hurdles, which is one tough event.

This group is selfless and willing to do what is asked of them,” Carlson said. “I am amazed at the true fun team spirit that exists with this group.”

Perhaps ‘next-girl-up’ was best shown, when Rebeka Teumer and Haley Van Der Hart stepped up for a four-five finish in the 1,500-meter run.

The girls always say that they just love being on the team, but of course they would, because all of these girls make this an amazing team to be on,” Carlson said. “I am so proud of all of them, and I hope that we can continue to improve and finish the season strong!”

UP NEXT – Montezuma’s girls and boys host the Darrell Brand Relays on Monday, May 10.

Izzy Roorda is locked in as she completes her leg of a relay at the conference meet.
