The Montezuma Bravettes A-team traveled to New Sharon to play the North Mahaska Warhawks on Monday, January 27.
The two teams had played each other in early January when Monte won a close game 29-25. This one would prove very similar.
The first quarter was a defensive slugfest with NM taking a 3-1 lead. Monte played their best quarter in the second as they outscored North Mahaska 10-5 to take a 11-8 lead to the half.
The second half was very back and forth. Monte won the third quarter by 2 to take a 20-15 lead. North Mahaska came out and hit a 3-pointer to start the 4th quarter.
The Bravettes clung to the lead. With the score 20-19. Brylee Latcham found Baylea Smith wide open under the hoop for 2 points. On the next possession, Brylee found Kady Schmidt for another basket.
Then, with one-minute remaining NM hit another 3-pointer to make it 24-22. The Bravettes were able to hold off the Warhawks in the last minute of the game. The final score was Monte 24 – North Mahaska 22.
Monte shot 9-40 (23%) from the field, 1-6 from the 3-point line and 5-18 from the free throw line. NM shot 8-45 (18%) from the field, 4-18 from the 3-point line and 2-6 from the free throw line. The Bravettes outrebounded the Warhawks 40-35. Monte had 8 turnovers and Mahaska had 7 turnovers.
Brielle Haughey led the way with 15 points & 7 rebounds. Kady Schmidt had 4 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists. Brylee Latcham had a 3-pointer and 5 assists. Baylea Smith had 2 points and 4 blocks. Mallory Warden had 3 steals. Keegan Gunderson had 5 rebounds.
The Montezuma Bravettes A-team moves to 7-4 on the season. Their end their season at Lynnville-Sully on Thursday, January 30.
