Girls beat L-S for first win

SULLY – The Montezuma Bravettes mixed equal doses of offense and defense, and the blend produced their first win of the season on Tuesday evening, Dec. 3.

The Bravettes were 51-41 winners over Lynnville-Sully.

Montezuma got away to a quick start, leading 16-9 after one quarter. The run continued as Vivian Cook opened the second quarter with a pair of threes to open a 22-11 lead.

The Hawks then applied stronger defense, especially out front, and shut out the Bravettes the rest of the half, which ended with Montezuma out front 22-20.

But the Bravettes finished off the win with a 29-21 edge in the second half. Included were scoring inside and out, and majority of 11 steals, which the Bravettes converted from the field and the free throw line.

The Bravettes featured balanced scoring and strong ballhandling.

All five Montezuma starters scored between 8 and 12 points.

The Bravettes also were guilty of just seven turnovers on the night.

Syd Burgess had an aggressive night near the basket. She led the Bravettes with 9 rebounds, and scored 8 points on four-of-six shooting.

Claire Erselius scored 10 points, and Shiressa Wetering led with 12.

Ellen Cook and Vivian Cook each scored 8 points.

The game concluded a stretch of four games against tough opponents to open the season. The first three of those games were against larger schools.

Montezuma went to 1-3 with the win.

Lynnville-Sully fell to 1-2.
