Girls bounce past English Valleys

NORTH ENGLISH – The varsity girls basketball teams from Montezuma and English Valleys entered their Tuesday, Jan. 14 game against each other with identical 7-4 records.

But it was evident right away that the Bears were no match for the seventh-ranked (Class 1A) Bravettes.

Montezuma built quarter leads of 17-6, 39-15 and 50-21 on its way to a 61-40 victory.

It was a balanced, workmanlike performance by the Bravettes, who put three players in double figures and checked off most the boxes that deal with perfromance

Ellen Cook scored 19 points, Vivian Cook had 14 and Shiressa Wetering dropped in 12 points.

Montezuma shot .462 from the field and assisted 15 of its 24 field goals.

Ellen Cook and Syd Burgess each had six assists.

Burgess led with 9 rebounds, while Ellen Cook and Wetering had 6 each.

Ellen Cook was 5-for-9 on three-pointers, while Vivian Cook was 4-for-10.

Burgess also scored 7 points and had 6 steals.

UP NEXT – The Bravettes, now 9-4, come home to play Iowa Valley on Thursday, Jan. 17.
