Girls compete with bigger schools

MONROE – Montezuma’s young girls track squad got the experience of competing against athletes from larger schools in their second meet of the season Tuesday, April 6, at the PCM Coed Classic.

The Bravettes won one event, finished second in two relays, and placed in 15 events in all.

Montezuma compiled 53 points, to place fifth in an eight-team field.

Getting a chance to compete against larger schools on an amazing night of weather is a blessing in the early part of the season,” said Bravettes coach Megan Carlson.

The girls competed hard and posted several season-best performances,” she said.

Katie Reynolds was the Bravette winner, taking the 400-meter dash in 1:04.61.

The Bravettes team of Reynolds, Elise Boulton, MJ Johannes and Mia Boulton were second in the 4×800, clocking 11:04.95.

Montezuma’s other second came in the JV 4×200, where Makenna Johannes, Carmen Klos, Elise Boulton and Haley Van Der Hart were timed in 2:17.19.

In the throws, all of the girls threw lifestime best marks and continue to remain competitive,” Carlson said. “The 4×800, 4×400 and 4×100 ran season-best times with several girls running lifetime best times.”

North Polk edged PCM 154 to 152 for the team title. Chariton was third with 66. Baxter edged Montezuma 63-53 for fourth, with Knoxville in sixth at 52.

I am so proud of how all the girls work hard and are willing to do what is asked of them regardless of the competition,” Carlson said.

PCM’s new complex is beautiful and provided a backdrop for some great competition,” said the coach.

It will be nice to use this as motivation as we prepare for North Mahaska and more SICL teams throughout the season.”

NEXT UP – Montezuma’s girls and boys are at North Mahaska on Thursday, April 8.
