‘Complete’ girls compile plenty of data in win

Defense wins championships and the Montezuma Bravettes were relentless on ‘D’ in a 71-13 varsity basketball win at home over HLV on Tuesday, Dec. 10.

The unbeaten Bravettes didn’t allow more than six points in any quarter. Winless HLV managed just three points in a continuous clock second half. ”This was a complete game from our young ladies against HLV,” said Coach Janel Burgess. “The defense we ALL played was very tough, disciplined and gritty.”

Montezuma led 18-4, 39-10 and 60-12 at the quarter breaks.

Shateah Wetering enjoyed a stat stuffer of an evening. She led all scorers with 22 points, which came on nine-for-17 shooting. She led Bravettes rebounders with nine, made a pair of three-pointers, dished five assists, had eight steals and had a pair of deflections.

Elise Boulton scored 14 points and dropped in four treys.

Dylan Holland scored 11 on five-for-five field goal shooting.

The Bravettes helped to create – and took advantage of – 36 turnovers by HLV.

Shanae Wetering put down eight points for the Bravettes, on three-for-five shooting. She also grabbed two rebounds.

“We are always building on our foundation of being a strong defensive team while creating an offensive tempo that puts pressure on the opposing team,” Burgess said.

“I felt like we did a great job of both focus points against HLV.”

The Bravettes took their record to 5-0, while HLV fell to 0-5.

“I am excited to see where the final three games before Christmas break lead us,” Burgess said.

“We have so much more improving to do and we are focused on getting better daily.”

“Our practices have been very focused, which is very encouraging,” Burgess said. “I believe our seniors are truly leading the way here!”

UP NEXT – Montezuma is at BGM on Friday evening, Dec. 13.
