Girls drop opener 9-8 after leading 8-4

The Bravettes honor America during the National Anthem at Colfax-Mingo.

COLFAX – Colfax-Mingo scored five runs in the sixth inning and edged Montezuma 9-8 in the softball season opener for Montezuma on Wednesday, May 22.

The Bravettes led 8-4 through their half of the sixth inning before giving up that big sixth to the Tigerhawks.

Madison Van Zee was two-for-four with a double and a run scored for the Bravettes.

Kamryn Schmidt drove in two runs with a single, stole a base and scored a run.

Leah Urfer was Montezuma’s starting pitcher. She worked two-and-one-third innings and struck out four.

Syd Burgess relieved her and worked four innings, giving up 8 hits and 6 runs, 5 of them earned. She walked 3 and struck out one. She was tagged with the loss.

Schmidt also gook a turn in the circle.

Chloe Snook scored two runs and was three-for-three in stolen bases. Schmidt and Burgess each stole a base.

The Bravettes lined eight hits. Getting a single each were Snook, Ellen Cook, Schmidt, Vivian Cook and Laila Kercheval.
