SIGOURNEY – There were two mild surprises at Monday’s opening round of the SICL volleyball tournament, both involving the Montezuma Bravettes.

The first surprise was that a four-win Keota team extended Montezuma to five sets before the Bravettes secured a 15-3 win in set five to take a 3-2 win.

The second: An eight-win Montezuma team extended a 19-6 Sigourney team to five sets before the Savages won.

The results send the Bravettes to the “silver” quad of conference play on Thursday, Oct. 13, at Iowa Valley.

In a session that will start at 5 p.m., BGM will play Iowa Valley, and Montezuma will take on Lynnville-Sully.

Monday’s results left the Bravettes at 8-16 on the season.

Scores:

Montezuma beat Keota 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 25-9, 22-25 and 15-3).

Sigourney beat Montezuma 3-2 (25-11, 25-18, 19-25, 19-25, 15-10.
