MARENGO – Montezuma’s varsity girls beat Iowa Valley 57-46 in non-conference play on Saturday night, Feb. 4.

The Bravettes won 66-37 when the two played in Montezuma back in December. The Tigers were a tougher “out” this time.

Montezuma also was coming off a physical, emotional win over EBF the night before.

We were playing another very physical team and we rose to the occasion (against Iowa Valley),” said Bravettes Coach Janel Burgess.

We did not back down. We attacked, we scored when we needed to.”

When the Bravettes especially needed to was early in the fourth quarter. Iowa Valley outscored the Bravettes 23-16 in the third quarter to cut Montezuma’s lead to 37-32.

But the Bravettes put up 20 points in the fourth, their best offensive quarter of the night, to sprint to the victory.

Guard Mia Boulton has been improving her ability to get to the free throw line and she took it to a new level in this game. Boulton went 15-for-15 from the line! She led Montezuma with 25 points and 7 assists.

Jadyn Sharer scored 16 points on 7-for-14 from the line, including 2-for-4 from behind the arc.

Ellen Cook scored 10 points and was 2-for-3 on treys.

The Bravettes helped cause 20 Iowa Valley turnovers, while making just 4 themselves.

The Bravettes really came down heavily on defense during the first half, when they outscored the Tigers 21-9.

The win lifted Montezuma to 17-3 overall.

Iowa Valley is 14-5.

This team,” Burgess said, has surely been a joy to watch mature!”

UP NEXT – The Bravettes and Braves are at Grundy Center on Tuesday, Feb. 7.
