Timely serving and strategic hitting – displayed at times by both teams – were important in Montezuma’s 3-1 win over Lynnville-Sully in varsity volleyball action Monday evening, Sept. 19, in Montezuma.
Scores were 25-15, 15-25, 26-24 and 25-17.
The win lifted the Bravettes past Lynnville-Sully in the South Iowa Cedar League standings.
Spurts of strong serving led to the teams playing the returns to pass to their setters, who then put the ball in good position for the hitters.
The Bravettes took special advantage of this in sets one and four. Montezuma was a 25-15 winner in set one, and made a decisive run as the team approached the 20-point mark in set four.
Overall, the Bravettes outscored the Hawks 76-71 and yes, it was close.
The victory lifted the Bravettes to 7-9 overall, but to 2-1 in SICL play.
Lynnville-Sully is now 2-2 against the league, and 5-15 against all opponents.
Montezuma won 2-0 in frosh-soph play on scores of 25-23 and 21-15.
Lynnville-Sully won the junior varsity match 2-1, on scores of 20-22, 21-11 and 15-13.
