The Montezuma Bravettes finished the 2020 portion of their season with a 9-1 record and a clear identity as a hard-working defensive team that features balanced scoring on offense.

The Bravettes kick off 2021 on Monday evening, Jan. 4, jumping up to Class 3A to take on a 6-2 West Marshall team in State Center.

It’s a JV/varsity doubleheader, with the JV’s playing at 6 p.m.

The four Bravettes scoring in doubles are Elise Boulton (17.1), Mia Boulton (10.9), Shanae Wetering (10.1) and Dylan Holland (10.0).

The team is scoring 64.7 points per game and giving up just 29.4. Those averages rank fifth and third in Class 1A, respectively.

This is a lunch box bunch, lacking the speed to fly up and down the court like recent Bravette teams. But they’re hard hat intense, take care of details, play in-your-face defense and they pound the boards.

Holland averages 8.5 rebounds per game. Wetering is at 5.1, and Kierstyn Price is at 3.5.

Elise Boulton averages 5.0 assists and is among the state leaders in Class 1A in that department. Mia Boulton averages 2.1 assists and Madison Johannes is at 2.1.

Montezuma will not hesitate to shoot three-pointers. The Bravettes are tossing up 29 per game, and making 10.2 per contest, a hefty .349 percentage.

West Marshall is a sophomore-dominated team, led by a talented 6-foot tenth grader, Katie Reyerson. She averages 21.0 points, 11.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists per contest.

West Marshall averages 44.9 points on offense and 36.5 on defense.

AFTER THIS – The Bravettes are at English Valleys on Tuesday, Jan. 5, and will host Iowa Valley on Friday, Jan. 8. Both of those will be girl-boy varsity doubleheaders.
