Girls keep swinging heavy metal

The varsity Bravettes’ bats kept popping – well, pinging – in an 11-9 win over BGM that saw Montezuma rap out 15 hits.

The game was played Wednesday, May 29, in Montezuma.

Montezuma pulled out the win by scoring 8 of its runs in its final two at bats.

BGM led 9-7 going into the bottom of the sixth, but that’s when the Bravettes erupted for four runs to take the lead.

Starting pitcher Leah Urfer, who went the distance, put BGM’s offense on lockdown in the seventh to preserve the win.

Three Bravettes had three hits each.

Izzy Roorda was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

Chloe Snook went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in.

Kam Schmidt was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Laila Kercheval drove in two runs with her pair of hits.

Getting one hit each were Madison Van Zee, Ellen Cook, Mya Smothers and Sydnee Burgess.

Smothers also stole two bases and Burgess drove in two runs.

Urfer’s seven innings included a yield of 10 hits and 9 runs, 5 of which were earned. She walked two and struck out five.

Emersyn Minneart had a pair of doubles for the Bears which drove in three runs.

Montezuma went to 2-3 on the season, while BGM fell to 3-2.
