Girls, opponent needed focus at Tri-County

THORNBURG – Montezuma’s unbeaten girls basketball team beat Tri-County 84-7, but if you’re a Bravettes fan, before you get excessively carried away by those numbers, put yourself into the opposing team’s sneakers:

You haven’t won a game. You have one senior, one sophomore and eight freshmen. You’re across from Iowa Hawkeyes recruit Shateah Wetering and the number one team in Class 1A.

Yeah, “Gulp!” is right.

Clearing snakes out of a ditch – by hand – might have been more fun and less threatening.

But the young Trojans didn’t run down the road with their hands over their heads. They stayed the course.

The Bravettes kept their focus, too, and did some good stuff on Tuesday evening, Jan. 7.

The aforementioned Wetering scored 25 points, Elise Boulton dropped in 16, and Montezuma took its record out to 10-0.

The Bravettes compiled some stunning stats: Like .625 field goal shooting, which included 10-for-21 from behind the three-point arc.

Montezuma made just three turnovers, to 27 by Tri-County.

The Bravettes won the rebound battle, 31-15.

Montezuma players also dished 18 assists on 35 made field goals.

Montezuma led 20-2 after one quarter, 47-4 at halftime and 69-7 through three quarters.

Shateah Wetering’s 25 points came on 11-for-14 field goal shooting. She was 9-for-11 on twos and 2-for-3 on treys.

Elise Boulton was 6-for-11 from the field, and that included 4-for-6 on three-pointers.

Mia Boulton scored 11 for Montezuma and was 3-for-6 from behind the arc.

Carissa Van Zee played just seven minutes, but packed a lot into them. She scored six points on 3-for-3 shooting, had three rebounds, a steal and a deflection.

Madison Johannes scored six points on three-for-five shooting. She added three steals and a rebound.

Dylan Holland led the team with eight rebounds and scored seven points.

Kierstyn Price didn’t score points, but dished five assists, had three steals and a deflection.

Maddy McKeag was active with four deflections, two steals, two assists and a three-pointer.

And so it went, as all Montezuma players made some kind of positive contribution to another team effort.

Tri-County shot just .150 from the field, and had 36 fewer shot attempts. The Trojans’ biggest quarter was 3 points in the third.

Tri-County is 0-9 for the season.

UPCOMING – The Bravettes host English Valleys Friday night, Jan. 10.
