SULLY – Montezuma’s girls will take the win.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls made them earn it.

The Bravettes prevailed 47-41, Monday night in a game that was important to both teams.

Lynnville-Sully had to play without 5-11 Majesta Vos, their season scoring, rebounding and assists leader. She was out with an injury.

The Bravettes went into 5-11 post Shiressa Wetering for three quick baskets, and Montezuma was away to a 15-0 start before the Hawkettes could gather themselves.

Vos did not play and that was a huge adjustment for Lynnville-Sully, but we knew they would adjust and compete,” said Bravettes Coach Janel Burgess.

Montezuma employed a physical full court press to generate multiple turnovers.

But Lynnville-Sully adjusted, rallied and trailed by just two, 23-21, at half.

What followed was a 17-8 third quarter by the Bravettes that saw their offense flow well, and featured five three-point baskets, two by Vivian Cook, one by Ellen Cook, one by Sydnee Burgess, and a buzzer-beater by Jadyn Sharer that put Montezuma up 40-29 after three periods.

The Hawkettes again battled back, chiseled a point off the deficit here, then there – but never got the lead.

We had such a TEAM win against a club that is well-coached and plays very well together as well,” Burgess said. “It was another gritty, team-focused, selfless win for our team,” said Montezuma’s coach. “We are eager to keep pushing our young ladies to get better and GROW.”

The win put 13th-ranked Montezuma at 12-2 overall and 9-2 in conference play.

Lynnville-Sully, rated 11th, is 13-3, and also 9-2.

Oh, and one more thing: “We truly have a fun group of ladies we are coaching,” Burgess said.
