Girls roll past Colfax-Mingo, 77-26

Teams work to improve from one end of the season to the other.

It appears the girls’ teams from Montezuma and Colfax-Mingo have done so.

The Bravettes scored a 77-26 win over the Tigerhawks on Friday evening, Jan. 22. It was a 55-6 Montezuma win back on Dec. 4.

Clearly, Colfax-Mingo was better than last time, especially on offense. The Bravettes, though, might be better than before all over the floor.

Montezuma took control early with a 25-5 first quarter. The lead was 42-13 by halftime and 56-19 through three quarters.

The Bravettes got out in transition early, worked on half-court sets later on, and dropped some three-balls throughout.

Meanwhile, Montezuma didn’t make any turnovers in the first or third quarters, and just six on the night, even though everyone played.

The victory was Montezuma’s 16th in a row. The Bravettes are 16-1 overall and 13-0 in SICL play.

Guard Elise Boulton scored 22 points and forward Shanae Wetering had 18. Post forward Dylan Holland scored 10, and Mia Boulton scored nine to just miss being a fourth Bravette into double figures. The Bravettes assisted 23 of their 30 field goals, with Elise Boulton handling nine of those.

The Bravettes came up with 13 steals on the night, using half-court defense most of the contest.

The Tigerhawks showed some patience against Montezuma’s rugged defense, and knocked down a trio of three-pointers during the game. Brennan Rhone led Colfax-Mingo scorers with 15 points.

Colfax-Mingo is 4-11 on the season, and 4-9 against South Iowa Cedar League opponents.
