Girls run well and qualify two in three events

Ellen Cook ran personal bests in the 1,500 and 3,000, qualifying for state in the longer race.

BROOKLYN – It was rainy and windy for the Class 1A state qualifying track meet on Thursday, May 11 at BGM.

It rained and blew on everyone, so the Montezuma girls didn’t seem to mind.

The Bravettes posted nine new bests, and qualified two girls in three events for the state meet May 18 – 20 in Des Moines.

Montezuma’s state qualifiers are Chloe Snook in the long jump and 200-meter dash, and Ellen Cook in the 3,000-meter run.

Cook had a sensational meet, placing second in the 1,500-meter run, and third in the 3,000, establishing personal bests by 12 seconds in each race.

Snook established a new personal best in the long jump, with a 15-10.25 leap that placed fourth.

Izzy Roorda long jumps at the state qualifying meet.

In order to make it to the state meet, athletes had to win their event to qualify automatically. After that, it got a little complicated. Below first place, an athlete had to have a scoring place finish, and be among the top 14 times or distances from all Class 1A meets in the state.

In terms of team score, the Bravettes were sixth out of 14 scoring teams.

The Bravettes had two second-place finishes and three third places.

We mentioned Cook’s second-place finish in the 1,500. The other second was in the sprint medley, by Kayl Young, Izzy Roorda, Macy Young, and Snook.

Snook’s 200 time of 27.43 was not her best, but it placed third and was fast enough when compared against times from other qualifying meets.

The Bravettes were third in the 4×400, with Macy Young, Kami Mathes, Izzy Roorda and Snook qualifying on time.

The other third was Cook’s run in the 3,000.
