SEARSBORO – Montezuma’s girls won the South Iowa Cedar League cross country meet, and the boys finished just four points out of second place.
The meet, hosted by Montezuma, was run Tuesday evening, Oct. 12, at Big Springs Shooting Complex.
Producing a low team score is achieved by runners packing together – near the top. That’s what the Bravettes did, and the Braves did a good job of it, too, although not as near to the top spot.
Ellen Cook placed second in 22:27.05, with teammates Alivia Cline third in 23:43.57, Madison Johannes sixth in 24:03.05, Beka Teumer eighth in 24:55.06, and Lydia Singleton was ninth in 24:57.83.
Those all were within about 1:30 of Cook’s time.
It was Montezuma’s third straight SICL girls cross country championship.
Greenlee Smock of Lynnville-Sully, the state’s 12th-ranked Class 1A runner, won in 21:36.57.
Montezuma’s boys packed four pretty solidly between Jayden Ross’ 11th-place 20:08.62, and Colton Benson’s 21st-place 21:08.35. In between were Carter McKee, arm cast and all, 14th at 20:23.80, and Jack Erselius, 20th at 21:05.06.
The Braves will be working at moving up a bit as they move into the post-season.
Montezuma’s middle school efforts were led by Claire Erselius, 7th among the girls, and Luke Erselius, third in the boys race.
All-SICL first team members are Ellen Cook and Alivia Cline.
Second team: Madison Johannes, Beka Teumer and Lydia Singleton.
Honorable mention: Mia Boulton, Jayden Ross.
