BELLE PLAINE – It was a cool but decent weather night and Montezuma’s high school track and field girls were eager to get outside and run a meet on Tuesday, March 22.

Competing in the larger schools class, the girls had a chance to run against some strong competition, said Bravettes Coach Megan Carlson. “And that’s what they need to reach their end of season goals.”

The Bravetes placed fifth in an eight-team field. Larger schools Eddyville-Blakesburg and Alburnett finished ahead of them. SICL teams Lynnville-Sully and North Mahaska weren’t too far away.

The Bravettes had one winner when freshman Chloe Snook took the 200-meter dash in 28.35 seconds.

Several Montezuma relays ran well. The 4×400 squad placed second, with Ellen Cook, Kami Mathes, Snook and Izzy Roorda clocking 4:39.72.

The Bravettes 4×100 team placed third in 57.72. Runners were Taya Sincox, Lily Ferry, Kayl Young and Macy Young.

The sprint medley team of Kayl Young, Macy Young, Roorda and Snook took third in 2:04.11, and the distance medley crew of Macy Young, Roorda, Ellen Cook and Mia Boulton placed third in 5:07.53.

This meet is a great learning experience and another level of foundation for the season ahead,” Carlson said.

We will need to continue to understand good warm-ups, nutrition, cool-downs and the different areas needed for success during meets,” the coach said.

Several girls ran season-bests despite sub-par conditions and they placed well throughout the meet,” Carlson said. “I am excited to watch them improve from this and continue to grow.”
